Series Introduction: Lamplight + Cassia as a solution

Welcome!

We are very excited to announce a series of articles we will be releasing over the coming weeks with our close partner, Cassia Networks. The series will focus on the application of real-time location systems (RTLS) within the automotive space, specifically targeting returnable packaging used for automotive manufacturing.

Returnable packaging is like a reusable grocery bag, but much more expensive!

When shipping vehicle components, it is critical that they make it to their destination safely and unharmed. Shipping in such a protected manner with single-use packaging is prohibitively expensive, so automotive companies invest in returnable packaging to amortize the shipping cost over the multi-year lifecycle of the returnable packaging as well as realize strong net savings over the course of a vehicle’s production lifespan.

Additionally, the environmental benefit cannot be overstated. The problem is, the packaging gets misplaced (or lost or stalled or stolen), and when the packaging is not where it should be when it is needed, companies are forced to buy single-use packaging anyway. Costs associated with missing returnables are massive, exceeding $1MM even for organizations with a small fleet size. More on all of this in the series…

Some examples of Returnable Packaging

How does RTLS help, and how does it work?

The basic components of an RTLS include:

  1. A tag, sometimes called a beacon
  2. A reader, sometimes called a gateway
  3. Backend software to process incoming data
  4. Frontend software to display the data in the form of positions on a map, dashboards, reports, live alerts, and more
  5. For effective systems, some means of doing something once positions are known, such as sending an alert email, text, or integrating with other software. This is called an Event Processor.

Who is Cassia Networks?

Cassia Networks is a leading provider of enterprise-grade Bluetooth IoT solutions, specializing in long-range, multi-device connectivity through advanced Bluetooth gateways and centralized software. Their hardware supports extended ranges (up to 1 km), seamless device roaming, and edge computing, while their IoT Access Controller enables centralized management of thousands of devices. Cassia’s patented Bluetooth Roaming™ technology allows uninterrupted connectivity across large areas without modifying end devices. Their solutions are used across industrial IoT, healthcare, and smart buildings.

In short, they provide best-in-class gateways and gateway management, which are critical components to an RTLS solution.

Who is Lamplight Logistics?

We are an Austin, TX-based firm that specializes in RTLS software, delivering advanced indoor and outdoor tracking solutions through its Spotlight™ platform. Our system combines multiple wireless technologies, such as Bluetooth, UWB, LoRa, RFID, 5G LTE, GNSS, and camera vision, with sensor networks and cloud or on-prem software to offer precise, real-time asset and personnel tracking. We pair this technology with engineering, deployment, and custom development services to ensure solutions are tailored, user-friendly, and actionable. Additionally, with the vast amount of data collected, we are utilizing AI and machine learning to help analyze and drive meaningful optimization for organizations.

By combining our innovative software stack and Cassia’s extensive portfolio of gateways, we are well suited to tackle any and all use-cases and tracking environments.

While returnable packaging is a major focus for us, RTLS can provide value to almost any vertical market, including manufacturing, oil & gas, healthcare, food & beverage, supply chain, and more.

Lamplight Logistics is different than other RTLS providers in a few significant ways:

We are agile & personal

Our team is small but efficient, and we know the pitfalls of deploying RTLS. We are not trying to shoehorn in a universal solution for every client. We assess every environment on an individual level to craft a solution that fits that client’s needs.

We are innovative

Our product has been engineered from the ground up utilizing the most recent technologies and languages. And being hardware agnostic, we can use the right hardware for the job, not just the hardware we have on the shelf.

We believe that ROI comes first

If there is no business case, there is no sale. Full stop. We work with our clients to help uncover the cost savings, productivity increase, and efficiency gains our product can produce. Wasting cycles on demos and PoCs when the numbers aren’t right is not something we are about.

We are easy to use

Without ease of use of a new system, there will be no adoption. Without end user buy-in, a new system is pointless. Our UI has been intentionally built to be easy to use, and it is customizable to account for different workflows various clients may have. Additionally, we provide user-definable actions right from our UI, including email and text alerts, zone-change notifications, and more. Finally, our solution is easy to install! We are on-prem or in the cloud, the readers can utilize onsite network connections or cellular, and tag installation is simple and fast.

We are looking forward to digging into more details about the benefits of RTLS in this upcoming series. Follow us on LinkedIn to catch all the updates!
